Starting in 2026, VERI*FACTU, the verifiable invoicing system promoted by the Tax Agency to ensure transparency and control in the issuance of invoices, will come into effect. This is a far-reaching regulatory change that will impact all companies and professionals issuing invoices in Spain.
Who will be required to use VERI*FACTU and when?
- Companies: starting January 1, 2026.
- Self-employed individuals: starting July 1, 2026.
This means that, in less than three months, all organisations must be prepared to invoice in accordance with the new technical requirements established by the regulations.
What is VERI*FACTU?
VERI*FACTU is a system designed to:
- Ensure that invoices cannot be tampered with after they are issued.
- Transmit billing information to the Tax Agency in real or near real time.
- Ensure that all invoicing software uses a standard, approved format.
- Improve traceability and tax control.
In practice, this means that invoicing software must be adapted to meet the technical requirements set by the Tax Agency (AEAT).
What should businesses and self-employed workers do to adapt to VERI*FACTU?
- Review current invoicing software to confirm that it can generate VERI*FACTU-compatible invoices.
- Plan the technological adaptation well in advance.
- Train the administrative and accounting staff so they understand how the new system works.
- Avoid improvised solutions that could jeopardise regulatory compliance.
